The Rise Of The Morzine Super Chalets

Anna | December 20, 2022

Having just returned from a long eye-opening tour of the new chalets in the Portes Du Soleil Chris Ashwell – Sales and Marketing specialist here at The Chalet Edit sheds some light on some fantastic new ultra-luxury properties in the Morzine and Les Gets ski area.
Les Portes du Soleil has always been a major snowsports destination for those looking to enjoy a wonderful blend of long, scenic skiing winding through the trees and across wide-open valleys, along with a friendly and atmospheric town life all just 1 hr from Geneva Airport. Consisting of 12 alpine resorts all well connected and with 650 km of runs to satisfy yourself with, it’s no wonder this winter wonderland has increased in popularity over the years.
This increase in winter travellers has gone hand in hand with the increase in demand for new levels of exquisite luxury chalets. Gone are the days of quaint little alpine properties with red and white checkered curtains and hearts cut into the wooden interior features, this is the age of the spacious modern super chalets with every mod con you could ever dream of.
In this day and age, a chalet is so much more than somewhere to just rest your weary legs after an amazing day of skiing, they are now a fully functioning luxury hub with facilities and amenities that rival and somewhat surpass most modern superyachts. Over the last 20 years if your chalet had a small swimming pool, hot tub, sauna or steam room then that would have been good enough to qualify for a solid level of luxury. These days however the new super chalets contain all four of those, plus the space for a spa treatment room, indoor climbing wall and many more fascinating features such as a slide from the entrance hall to the playroom. The scale of these properties is simply staggering, however the incredulous level of detail that they are designed with matches the sheer might and awesomeness, leaving no stone unturned throughout the process.

What is a “super chalet”?

A Super Chalet is an exceptionally large, luxurious, and upscale version of a traditional ski chalet. These properties offer the best amenities, even more spacious and luxurious accommodations, and the curated, high-end features that you would expect for an exclusive stay. Super chalets include private spas, bespoke swimming pools, tailored bedrooms and bathrooms, top-of-the-line kitchen appliances, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, and unforgettable views of the surrounding mountains.

Gone are the days of squeezing between the bed and the walls in your ski gear in an attempt to escape the clutches of the small bedrooms of the traditional alpine chalets, most of these new leviathan chalets could host a game of tennis in the bedrooms, and a full 15 a side rugby match from the entrance halls to the lounge, they really are massive.

The classic chalet designs have been torn up and torched, and the new system seems to have no limits or boundaries regardless of the restrictions due to the size of the plot of land. Can’t build out sideways, not a problem we’ll just continue to pile floors on top of each other whilst simultaneously tunnelling into the hillside to create an underground sanctuary for the spa and wellness area.

This is all very well and good, but a chalet on its own is still nothing without the amazing teams that work in them to ensure that the guest experience is second to none, from chalet managers, chalet hosts, chefs, drivers and even maintenance teams you really don’t have to lift a finger.

It’s a good job that a ski holiday is an active one, as the amount of food that is prepared to the highest standards of top-quality restaurants is enough to easily quash even the most gluttonous of appetites. Year after year these incredible feats of engineering continue to raise the benchmark for luxury chalets, which makes me incredibly excited to wonder what the future holds and the direction these behemoth properties will go in.

Below I have picked a few of the most impressive new luxury chalets in Morzine that I was lucky enough to visit first-hand, for you to feast your eyes on.
