Pragelato is best for families, intermediate skiers, non-skiers and those looking for a quieter ski holiday option.
The best time is from mid-December to early April.
Pragelato nursery slopes are located right outside the ski school in the centre of the resort, so it’s great as a meeting point. There are some lovely wide and easy tree-lined blue runs on the way down to Borgata that are often used for beginners.
The village of Pragelato is mainly taken up by the Club Med property however there are a few traditional restaurants offering delicious hot chocolate. Children could also be taken husky sledding.
Located in the Italian Alps just 1 hour and 40 minutes from Turin, Pragelato is a traditional Italian resort in the Piedmont region built for the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics. Situated on the valley floor of the Sestriere valley with access to the huge Milky Way (Via Lattea) ski area Pragelato offers skiers access to over 400 kilometers of slopes. The village is linked to the resorts of Sauze D’Oux, Claviere, and Montgenevre along with the smaller local neighbouring hamlet of Pattamouche.
Located at 1,535m Pragelato has an excellent snow record and 50km of local pistes, however, most proficient skiers will head up the mountain via the main gondola to explore the vast Milky Way. Those staying in neighbouring Pattamouche will also be able to take advantage of the Olympic cross-country ski course and local heli-ski pad.
The village of Pragelato is mainly taken up by the large Club Med accommodation that has been built sympathetically built in chalet style to complement the charming local church and smattering of local restaurants. Much of the village was purpose-built for the 2006 Winter Olympics and the area has benefited from substantial investment in its infrastructure for winter sports and the resort is renowned for its excellent ski jump and Nordic facilities.
The Milky Way is one of the world’s premier intermediate ski areas connecting 400km of slopes and one pretty ski village to another. There is a great selection of blue and red runs for intermediate skiers and some fantastic off-piste skiing for those looking to try something more adventurous. On the whole, the runs are very wide open and not too busy, perfect for family groups.

There are a few local restaurants and bars in Pragelato and neighbouring Pattemouche serving delicious Italian-French style cuisine, raclettes and fondues and a few cafes. Some of these become lively in the evenings and have an excellent selection of local wines and aperitifs to sample.
The majority of après ski in this area is located in Sestriere a short 10-minute drive from Pragelato and its neighbouring hamlet of Pattemouche. As you drive into Sestriere from Pattemouche, you will see, on the left-hand side, in front of the slopes and by the main car park, a long building called Kandahar, which has a number of ski shops and casual bars and restaurants. Cafeteria delle Colle is at the Pattemouche end of the building and is a great place for a cappuccino. Further along is bar QB, run by the ski instructors of Sestriere, which has a nice vibe for après-ski, with a great selection of wines. Roba di Kappa is also worth a try for apres ski with its raised terrace.
There is a disco in Sestriere called Tabata. Tabata is a pretty famous institution and generally a lot of fun. Call Franchino to book a table right on the dance floor and laugh the night away!! You will have to pay for a bottle of spirits to be able to do this, but it is well worth it.
Raggio di sole at the top of the Pattamouche cable car has a great sun terrace where an entire day could be whiled away with a good book. Lovely coffee, cakes and delicious home-cooked food with a different speciality every day. They also organise dinners with arrival and departure on Skidoos from Borgata.
IL Capricorno in Sauze D’oulx is perfect for finer dining. White linen table cloths and nice wine glasses on the slopes. This place is a must for the skier who is prepared to venture further afield. Taxis or minivans can be arranged to get home if need be!
Tana delle Volpe in Monte Banchetta sits at 2,555 metres, one of the higher restaurants on the slopes; take either of the chairlifts up to Monte Motta or Monte Banchetta from Borgata, and you will see
Tana delle Volpe, a big mustard-brown/yellow building with amazing views, and really great food. It’s wonderful for lunch and/or pre downhill home apperitivo. It is open all day, and also at night when you can either arrange for Skidoo rides up to the restaurant, or ski down to Borgata by torchlight after dinner.
Al Mulino pizzeria is a lovely casual family-run pizzeria that won the ‘best pizza in Italy ‘ award in 2008 – it only does pizzas and very few other things, although the dessert trolley is fantastic! It is always busy with families early evening and groups later in the evening. Be prepared to wait in line and have a drink at the bar.
Hidden away in the old village of Plan di Pragelato, La Greppia is a charming restaurant, with a really fun atmosphere, set under an exposed stone vaulted ceiling. They specialising in raclette, fondue and pierrade (cooking raw meat/vegetables on a hot stone). You can almost walk past this restaurant if you did not know it was there.
Cantina degli Amici in Frazione Traverses is a must try! This restaurant focuses on the cuisine of the broader region of Oc, which extended from North-West Italy across the south of France and is one of the best restaurants in the surrounding area. Molten robiola cheese wrapped in paper and served on a bed of speck and potato rosti is a favourite starter, while the onion soup is also delicious.
