My First Experience of a Luxury Chalet Stay

Well. Wow. I have just been lucky enough to head out for my first opportunity to get a true experience of what the luxury chalet scene looks and feels like out in Val d’Isere. And I must say I am beyond impressed.

Staying at the beautiful Chalet Mistral the team made sure everything was absolutely perfect. It is that wonderful point of knowing you are surrounded by friendly, charming professional staff, but you barely know they are there.

On arrival in Geneva we were met by the efficient Mountain Rescue Transfers and we were quickly on our way to the Chalet despite the heavy snow. On arrival we enjoyed an absolutely delicious afternoon tea, and with a savoury and sweet option always provided, it is the perfect way to restore flagging energy.

Replenished after our day of travelling we decided to head to the outdoor hot tub for some real pampering and rejuvenation. Warm robes and slippers saw us through the falling snow and once ensconced in the bubbling water, Jamie our host, came and lit candles and served us all Champagne. Utter Bliss.

Supper was served from 7.30 and with Alessi the Italian Chef talking us through the menu and Jamie the wines (each course merited its own carefully select wine) we adored every mouthful.

The next day the clouds had cleared and after I’d been bought a gorgeous cup of coffee and juice in bed we had a huge breakfast before heading out for an absolute ‘bluebird’ day of skiing. Fresh snow, a brilliant lift system and a guide to show me the way. We flew around, and cleared the cobwebs from all the indulging the night before. Finding a gorgeous spot for lunch I had a simple and delicious steak hache and frites and we headed off for the rest of the afternoon. I can honestly say this was probably the best days skiing I’ve had, well cared for pistes, great lifts and beautifully quiet slopes.

Towards four o’clock we headed for ‘La Foulie Douce’. For those that know Val you will be familiar, but this is an epic undertaking of a first class party venue. With cabaret, music, DJ’s and a LOT of dancing on the table, we enjoyed it all and I managed to get up on a table before the cold drove us on. Back in town we dropped the skis and boots off, calling our driver to bring us our shoes so we could head to Coco Ricos for another drink. Deciding it time to head back we were quickly collected and got back in time for a quick slice of cake before another dip in the hot tub.

I’ve been trying to work out what the highlights of the trip were and it’s been tricky, as I can’t think of any point that wasn’t perfect! However if pushed I’d have to say the service, the skiing, the food and the chalet. Oh, and the apres ski of course!

As for what I’ve learnt, well the phrase ‘evening turndown’ doesn’t really cover it. My room tidied, my clothes neatly folded and the bathroom bits ordered to perfection. As a mother of two this was such an indulgence! With such exceptional service this level of luxury is 100% worth every penny…now when can I get back out there?
